Pakistan has decided to use 2,000 megawatts (MW) of its electricity for Bitcoin mining and Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers. The Finance Ministry shared this plan as the first step in a new strategy.
The government said Pakistan has a special location in the world. It connects Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, which makes it a good place to build big data centers.
This move is not just because Pakistan supports Bitcoin. It’s more about solving problems in the country’s energy system. Many people in Pakistan now use solar power because electricity from the grid is too expensive. As a result, the government has too much unused electricity.
To make use of this extra power, the Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC) — a new government-backed group — is leading a plan. This plan will:
-
Create new tech jobs
-
Attract money from foreign investors
-
Use extra electricity in a smart way
Right now, Pakistan has 22 data centers in three big cities: Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad. Some of the companies running these centers are PTCL, Multinet, Chapal, Supernet, Cybernet, and Vision Telecom.
In 2023, the University of Turbat opened a new data center powered by solar energy. It uses a 1MW solar power system.
In March, telecom company Jazz and China’s Huawei made a deal to add solar panels at 1,000 locations in Pakistan. This project could cut electricity costs by up to 96%.
Pakistan also agreed early to use Starlink — the satellite internet service by Elon Musk’s company SpaceX. This helped improve ties with the US.
Starlink is also being used in places like Somalia, Congo, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. It has deals with two companies in India too.
Meanwhile, in Kuwait, the use of electricity dropped by 50% after the government cracked down on crypto mining to stop blackouts during hot summer months.
